Benefits include: Gas & insurance is included, you only pay for what you use (minimum of one hour in 30 minute increments), you get to choose the exact car & location you want to rent from, the entire reservation & pickup process is seamless, and you can usually find a coupon to almost completely cover the one-time membership fee.

Potential uses: Test drive a hybrid without the pesky salesman, Pack for a camping trip in a pickup truck or SUV, Make a trip to Costco or IKEA, Pick up your family & all their luggage at the airport, Hit the beach in a convertible.

There are a few other companies dabbling in car sharing & I encourage you to check them out. I can tell you that being a “Zipster” has definitely simplified my life.

As summer comes to a close, I thought it would be nice to take a look at all of the fun activities that Boston has to offer. And, in the vein of simplicity, they all cost $5 or less:

  1. Crane Beach in Ipswich: Take the bus from Boston & spend the day sunning on the beach or hiking the Crane Estate.
  2. Area Museums: Use you library card to visit the MFA, Aquarium, Children’s Museum, Harvard Museum of Natural History & more…
  3. Cambridge Summer in the City: Great kid-focused arts program in the parks, throughout the summer. (See 2008 Schedule)
  4. Carson Beach in South Boston: Watch airplanes taking off and landing, then hang on the beach – get there easily by public transportation.
  5. Baby-Friendly Movies in Arlington: Head over to the Capitol Theater on Monday afternoons
  6. Boston Commons Frog Pond: Hit the Skating Rink in the Winter & the Wading Pool in the Summer
  7. Sail the Charles: Join the Summer Program at Community Boating, it’s only $1 for 10-18 year olds
  8. Swan Boat Rides in Boston Public Garden: A Must-Do for anyone visiting Boston
  9. The Hatch Shell on the Boston Esplanade in the Summer: Orchestra Concerts every Wednesday & Friday Flicks
  10. Walking Tours: Take The Freedom Trail, The Literary Tour of Boston or an Audio Tour on your iPod
  11. Roller Skating in Dorchester: Check out Family Night at Chez-Vous on Thursday nights
  12. Walden Pond: Drive out to Concord for Swimming in the Summer & Hiking Year-Round
  13. Take the T to Jamaica Plain: Check out the Arboretum, or the Sculpture Garden at the Forest Hills Cemetery. Stop by the original J.P.Licks for a tasty frozen treat!

I’m trying it in Cambridge… It’s pretty cool & I feel good about doing it.  The only downside is the swarm of fruit flies uder the kitchen sink.  ick.
