The search for a simple gift
When it comes to buying toys for our kids, my wife and I seldom disagree – “less is better” most accurately describes our philosophy. This week my oldest son turns 3 and we know what’s coming – toys, games and books will clutter the house for at least the next week and a half. We fully intend to buy him a present that he is going to love, but we don’t want to contribute to the endless amounts of bounty. So this year we have a secret weapon… A bubble machine.
It’s just one little plastic hand held device that shoots seemingly endless amounts of bubbles! Out of all of the expensive toys and games that my son will surely devour, we hope it will be this simple one that he’ll be crowing about to Grammy and Gramps on the phone.
Will buying a bubble machine simplify my life? We’ll see.

I’ve heard great things about toys at ebeanstalk http://www.ebeanstalk.com. We bought our niece a ‘toy series’ which sends her a simple fun toy every 3 months. (kinda like wine of the month club… but for babies)
Okay, so I spent some time this weekend (very coincidentally) with a bottle of soapy water and plastic wand *ahem, bubbles* in hand. Not only were the two children in the vicinity wildly entertained, but I too found myself totally absorbed by how amusing such a simple “toy” can be. Makes me wonder what else from my childhood still has appeal to kids that are used to having portable DVD players strapped to their chests. Refrigerator box *ahem, Superbase Headquarters* anyone??
Just busted out the bubbles with my niece!
It really is amazing just watching her utter fascination with bubbles. It blew her mind.
